Genre Fiction Writing and Catholicism Episode Summary
Can genre fiction writing and Catholicism coexist?
In this episode I try to answer that question as I share some of my own struggles in writing genre fiction. This episode focuses on paranormal and fantasy fiction but can be applied to other genres as well.
Genre Fiction Writing and Catholicism Challenges
They are not of the world, as I also am not of the world. Sanctify them in truth. Thy word is truth.– John 17:16-17, Douay-Rheims Bible
Fiction describes imaginary events, not facts. Science fiction, paranormal romance, fantasy fiction and many romances do stretch or exaggerate what we know to be true. But that isn’t the same thing as denying or opposing fundamental truths.
Some of the themes I find troubling in contemporary genre fiction (especially the fantasy, paranormal and paranormal romance genres are:
- Denying the existence of God or portraying God in a negative light, e.g. cruel, distance, manipulative.
- Presenting magical or occult forces, and those who harness such forces, as all powerful.
- Misrepresenting the true nature of demons, angels and the human soul.
- Promoting sex over emotional intimacy and sex appeal over character.
Because these themes are so common in the genres in which we write and read, it can be hard to avoid them completely. But a good first step is to be aware of them. The gap between popular genre fiction writing and Catholicism can be reconciled, in my opinion, but discernment is required.
