When this became known to the Jews and Greeks living in Ephesus, they were all seized with fear, and the name of the Lord Jesus was held in high honor. Many of those who believed now came and openly confessed what they had done. A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly. When they calculated the value of the scrolls, the total came to fifty thousand drachmas. – Acts 19:17-19
It has been some time since I cleared out the many idols, tarot cards and occult books I’d amassed during my time in the new age and occult. While I had wanted to burn these items, as did the people of Ephesus, my family seemed so disturbed at the thought that I decided to put them out in the garbage instead. And so out they went, bag after bag after bag.
I felt sure I had gotten rid of every occult item I’ possessed but when I emptied my hall closet last weekend in the name of spring cleaning, I found a few items that I had overlooked. So I decided that, this time, I am going to burn them.
Too many this may seem extreme but the truth is that occult items can connect us to the same supernatural reality we are trying to break free of. And this can happen to anyone, whether they have been in the new age or occult or not – as respected Christian author and Bible teacher Derek Prince describes in the wonderful book “Blessing or Curse: You Can Choose.”
In Prince’s case, the items were a set of Asian wall hanging he had inherited from his grandfather. After researching the imperial dragons embroidered on these tapestries, Prince realized they were once connected to pagan practices and promptly removed the tapestries from his home despite their sentimental (and monetary) value.
…the embroidered Chinese dragons exposed me to the invisible influence of a curse. It was true that I had no intention of worshiping them. Nevertheless, they represented something that had been an object of idolatrous worship for many centuries. They opened a channel into my home for the evil power of pagan worship that had been practiced for millennia.
Looking back later, I noticed one particular effect that those dragons had on me. Not merely were they a barrier that kept me from moving forward into the blessing of prosperity. They even kept me from seeing that the blessing was actually there. Only after I was free from their influence could I discern by faith what God had prepared for me.
Prince recommends burning these objects and also explicitly recommends removing statues of saints or the holy family from your home. This aspect of Christian housekeeping is an ongoing and difficult process for many of as we struggle to break free of the new age and occult.
