In this video I share a bit about what I’m learning about Agroecology or Sustainable Agriculture, the concept of Christian stewardship and a couple great resources on these topics by sustainable farming expert Joel Salatin.
Sustainability is important to me for several reasons. They include:
- Food Security: Having our own sustainable food supply makes us less reliant on grocery stores and corporations.
- Financial: A garden is very cost-effective. particularly if we are starting our plants from seeds. Unlike earned income, money saved by growing your own food is not subject to tax.
- Stewardship: sustainable gardening allows us to improve on whatever bit of land we’ve been given. It also decreases our support of big agriculture which is detrimental to the environment.
- Health: Organic home gardens offer pesticide free, nutrient rich produce and a good source of exercise.
I recommend a couple of books by Joel Salatin in the video, You Can Farm: The Entrepreneur’s Guide to Start & Succeed in a Farming Enterprise and The Marvelous Pigness of Pigs: Respecting and Caring for All God’s Creation – both of which are fantastic reads. I would also like to add Mini Farming: Self-Sufficiency on 1/4 Acre which is a wonderful resource as well.
One correction. I share that my yard is a 1/4 acre in the video. It is actually a bit over a 1/3 but with two houses, a driveway, patio and a garage on the property it still is not a lot of space. Having said that, it is enough for us – for now 🙂
