Bible Study Backstory
I few months ago, I picked up the The One Year Bible for Women after hearing Doreen Virtue talk about it on Vimeo and have been reading it every day since.
The first few weeks of working with the One Year Bible were a little tough because I was determined to read the entire Bible in 2018 and had some catching up to do. But what came after was a joy!
Reading the Bible everyday in a systematic way and journaling on it using the S.O.A.P. note format has been so helpful to me as a new Bible believing Christian that I wanted to share what I am doing here so that you could do it too, if you’d like.
The One Year Bible
The One Year Bible is set up in a different order than an ordinary Bible. For each day of the year, you will find a reading from the Old Testament, New Testament, Proverbs and Psalms.
The readings from the Old Testament start with Genesis and work straight through (with the exception of the passages from Psalms and Proverbs). The New Testament selection begins with Matthew and ends with Revelation. The passages from Psalms and Proverbs are not in order but often tie in with the other readings.
The One Year Bible comes in many different versions. I like the Women’s Version which is the New Living Translation and a very pretty Bible. But there is also a regular NLT One Year Bible , a NKJV One Year, Kindle version and more. There is ALSO a One Year Chronological Bible. While it’s really only personal preference I prefer the mix of Old and New Testament found in regular One Year Bible.
You can order the One Year Bible on amazon or read it for free online at OneYearBibleOnline.com. To read it online simply visit the site, choose One Year or Chronological, select a language and version and click on the link for the day’s reading. You can also use the chapter and verse listed to read the day’s passage in your own Bible.
Please note, you can Bible journal using S.O.A.P. notes using any Bible and any Bible reading plan or even no plan at all!
My method is to read through the day’s reading and then choose one verse or short passage of Scripture to explore deeply by journaling on it using the S.O.A.P note format. (If you haven’t used the S.O.A.P method you can learn more about it here.) You can type, record or write your S.O.A.P. For me writing the note out by hand works best because writing by hand is more flow of conscious because I am less likely to edit what I’m writing.
After I finish journaling, I say the prayer the reading has inspired (the P in S.O.A.P ). If I have time I read the One Year Bible Companion entry because it always provides some interesting background info and is a very quick read. Then I start my day.
There are many benefits to spending time in the Word everyday! The Word of God is a living Word and I believe it speaks to me directly and guides me through the events of my life. Often the passage that I choose to journal on answers a question or provides instruction, either immediately or as I journal on it, on something that is very relevant to my life.
The S.O.A.P. Note Bible Journal
Every week, I’ll be sharing my favorite S.O.A.P. note from the preceding week here in this blog. This is NOT a full study or discussion of the reading as a whole. But I do hope that will helpful if you are new to personal Bible study, just curious about how God’s Word is working in somebody else’s life or wondering if my favorite passage was the same as yours!
To give you a better idea of how S.O.A.P. note jounaling works for me I’ll share my daily journal entries from the next couple of weeks and then go on to share my favorite daily journal entry at the rate of one per week. Each S.O.A.P. Note Bible Jouranl entry will also include a list of the One Year Bible readings for the coming week.
You may also want to join Doreen Virtue nightly on Instagram Live as she provides a lovely summary and commentary on the One Year and Chronological readings. Or check out my brand new Scripture Sunday podcast that will feature a new Bible passage every week!
